Instead, the vendor wants you to fill out a quote form and a customized price will be sent back to you via email. No estimated cost listed. No mention of how long it might take to get back to you.
Time to panic.

What if the price isn’t within your reach? How would you know if you’re being ripped off? And what if you finally decide on one vendor’s ITAM software only to discover that there was a more affordable option later?
Stop the music.
Buying software can be intimidating, even for IT professionals. But not to worry. I’ve done some research to put your symphony of fears to rest.
Below are three of the most common pricing models in ITAM software with an estimated cost range included so you can budget accordingly.

1) Tiered Model
ITAM software often has to offer a variety of services for you to get the most out of your purchase. Unfortunately, there isn’t software that can do everything (at least not yet), but vendors understand that you need a variety of options to choose from to find what you need. This is where tiered pricing options come in.
The tiered pricing model lists a handful of software packages to choose from, ranging from basic or standard to premier or enterprise. Depending on how much you’re willing to pay, each ascending package offers more features.
If you’re looking for a more tailored software in your search, this is definitely a great option.
Price Range: Can be as little as $25/month ($300/year) for smaller businesses with upwards of $3,000/month ($36,000/year) for the corporate world.

2) Pay-Per-User
Pay-per-user is exactly as it sounds: the cost depends on how many individual users will be using the software you’ve purchased.
Higher prices usually correlate with more users, although some vendors will offer a lower per-user rate if you have a larger number of employees.
Price Range: Rates can be as small as $9/month ($108/year) per user or $99/month ($1,188/year) per user depending on your package.

3) Pay-Per-Node
Due to a business’s increased reliance on network devices, pay-per-node is becoming a popular pricing model for ITAM software vendors. In this model, you pay based on the estimated number of nodes (network devices with an IP address) you need to inventory in your business.
This pricing model is also great for measuring projected costs, as many pay-per-node models show you the projected cost for your purchase based on how many nodes you need to inventory.
Price Range: Starts at $69 for up to 25 nodes ($2.8 per node) up to $2,490 for unlimited nodes. However, prices may vary a bit depending on if you’re purchasing for Mac or Windows.

Other Pricing Models
Surprised that pay-per-asset didn’t make the top three? I was too, but it seems that vendors are evolving from this model to the more complex tier model, which highlights other special features in an effort to incentivize spending. The tier model may also be more accommodating for growing businesses, whose exact number of assets may change over the course of a month.
